Exploring TeamLab Planets in Tokyo: A Practical Guide

https://www.teamlab.art/e/planets/

So, you’re thinking about diving into the mesmerizing world of TeamLab Planets in Tokyo? Get ready, because while it’s an Instagrammer’s paradise, it also comes with a few logistical hoops to jump through. But don’t worry, we’ve got the lowdown to help you navigate your visit.

Booking in Advance: Don’t Wing It

Thinking of just showing up? Think again. You’ll want to book your tickets about two months in advance—or as far ahead as the system lets you. Unless, of course, you enjoy the thrill of waiting in line and getting turned away.

Pricing and How to Book

Prices fluctuate based on age and the day of the week, so you might want to double-check their website. General admission is around ¥3200, but they do offer discounts for students and children. Booking is straightforward through their official website. Here’s the address for your map app:

6-1-16 Toyosu, Koto City, Tokyo 135-0061, Japan.

Dress Code: Prepare to Get Wet

A word of caution: you will get wet. Wear shorts or pants you can roll up, and maybe bring clips to hike them up even further. You’ll be wading through knee-high water if you’re around 5’4″, and thigh-high if you’re 5’1″. Oh, and those stylish shoes? Lock ‘em up. They’re not making the journey with you.

Photo Ops: The Must-See Rooms

Let’s talk about the spots we think are key photo-ops:

  1. The Water Room: It’s exactly what it sounds like. You’ll be wading through water, so keep your camera gear safe. Perfect for those dramatic, reflective shots.
  2. The Light Room: Think infinity mirrors and endless LED lights. It’s disorienting in the best way possible. Just try not to walk into a wall while you’re staring at the lights.
  3. The Ball Room: Giant, floating balls of light. Great for those artsy shots that make you look super cultured.
  4. The Orchid Room: Floating orchids in a bright room. It’s as dreamy as it sounds and smells like a botanical garden.

Déjà Vu: Overlaps with TeamLab Borderless

If you’ve already been to TeamLab Borderless, some of the rooms might give you a sense of déjà vu. The Drawing Room, the Hanging Lights Room, and the Ball of Light Reflection Room are also part of the Planets experience. We breezed through these since we’d seen them before, but still ended up spending an hour exploring. It’s a massive space, and we were on a mission to make our dinner reservation.

Final Thoughts

Would we recommend it? Absolutely. Just go prepared, manage your expectations, and you’ll have a blast. Or at least some fantastic photos to show for it. They’re supposed to continue to run until 2027 so make sure to keep them in mind for your next Japan trip!
