With COVID-19 going around and everything closed because of it in California, you might start to wonder to yourself where can you go safely that’s anywhere but your house for fun.
We have gone out and found some places to recommend for a day trip away from LA. This is the first of the series (day trip to San Luis Obispo!).
We went to San Luis Obispo for the weekend, but you can really do a day trip out of it. It was a very chill and relaxing type of adventure. We would have loved to do ATV on Pismo Beach, but they are closed. If you asked me, it seems like a safer COVID activity than eating outside. 💁

Morro Bay is about a 3.5 hour drive from LA. You can leave after breakfast.
Day Activities
There are many wineries and distilleries around the area. They are open during COVID. They have food options so they can be open during the pandemic. Their food menu is limited in options. All menus everywhere are limited due to COVID, including McDonalds. I would suggest to call ahead of time for what the food options are for that day. They are subject to change daily/weekly.
I would suggest against going to Pismo Pier. It was SUPER crowded. Main beaches are the most populated even with COVID. Traffic near the pier is bad. If you want to do a water activity, they have paddle boarding and kayaking rentals available. There are other less popular places that still have great views if you just wanted to hang out at the beach.
Sunset Activities
Get dinner at Ventana Grill. They have a wonderful view of the ocean from their restaurant with ample seating. The menu is limited as well. There might be a line if you go around 6pm but they should be able to seat you. Sadly, I wanted to come to this restaurant specifically because they had a staircase outside leading to nowhere. When we went, it was taken out!
Ok, I guess we just didn’t read the post… It did say that in 2016 the stairs were taken out…😒
If you’re not in the mood for an ocean view dinner, you can check out the sunset at the beach at Morro Rock. If you walk further away from the rock, you can get a good amount of the beach to yourself. We parked at Morro Rock Strand Trail. The beach has an interesting feature to some parts of it where the sand is a gradual descend to the ocean allowing it to have cool patterns in pictures.
Although I did have to move some kelp to get it this clean…
Night Activities
If you still have enough energy and was able to get tickets in advance, go to Field of Lights at Sensorio in Paso Robles (30 mins from Pismo Beach). If you didn’t get tickets ahead of time, that’s fine too. They do take walk-in appointments, but your entrance isn’t guaranteed. They don’t let people start coming in till 9pm, if they’re a walk-in.
If you weren’t able to get tickets and don’t feel like waiting for uncertain amount of time, don’t worry. They extended this exhibit till January 3, 2021 due to popular demand.
Otherwise there isn’t much else to recommend for night time stuff, haha! 😂
