We decided to go to the LA River for the third day (October 1, 2018) because we’ve never gone there before and it seemed like everyone has been. The challenge was figuring out how to access the river and after doing some research, we found an entrance on 6th Street and Santa Fe.
When you get to this cross section, you will need to look for a tunnel entrance. At first we drove our car through it until the very end but then saw a steep decline with a ramp. There is construction so you won’t be able to access this with your car if you wanted car pictures at this entrance. We drove the car back out, parked, and went on foot. The tunnel gets dark at some areas so if you are going at sunset like we did, just be aware and have a flashlight or your phones ready with enough battery. After getting through the tunnel, you’re basically there.
We were surprised that there was actually water running! The LA River is known for being a drought almost all year round since LA doesn’t get much rain. The only other people there was a construction crew that was working on the top of the river. They didn’t bother us and it was kind of nice knowing that there were other people around. The river and the tunnel can get creepy at night.
If you want to take photos or fly your drone like we did, there is a standing platform that will put you in the middle of the river. You’ll just have to walk or jump across some water. It looks like the platform was put there temporarily so it might not be there by the time you go (just something to keep in mind).
