Pura Lempuyang Temple Gates

Pura Lempuyang Temple Gates

Visiting Pura Lempuyang Temple Gates (‘Gates of Heaven’) is a must do when you are in Bali. If you are lucky you will be able to see Mount Agung in the background. The view is truly magical – read more to know the secret of the famous reflection photo!

Hours

The temple hours are from 9AM to 6PM however we were able to visit the gates before 9AM since we wanted to see the sun rise.

Admission

There is no entrance fee but you can give a small donation.

Directions

Lempuyang Temple is located about 4 hours northeast of Kuta. We left our Airbnb at about 2-3AM just so that we can make it in time for sunrise (which did not disappoint!).

When you are visiting this temple, make sure to follow their rules (this is an extremely religious temple). Women will also need to wear a sarong (our driver rented 2 for us).

There are actually seven temples that make up Pura Lempuyang Temple and it would take you a few hours to walk through all of them. Since we were short on time (we had to catch a flight back to LA that same day), we decided to only visit the first temple which is where the famous gates are.

Luckily for us, we were early enough to be the first people there! We even got a little lost haha. We managed to take all of our photos without much interruption. If you visit this temple without doing more research, you will expect there to be water to create this reflection:

But you’ll find that there isn’t any water at all here! To get that water reflection photo, a local photographer uses a black mirror to create the reflection. You can donate/tip him in USD or IDR (we gave him about $5).

This was one of the last things that we did while in Bali and it was the perfect way to end our trip!
