Directions
The immersive Van Gogh exhibit is located at 6400 Sunset Boulevard at the former Amoeba Music building.
Parking
There is a paid parking lot right next to the venue (entrance is on Cahuenga). If it is full, you can try to find street parking or try one of these lots that they recommend:
- 6372 Sunset Boulevard (right next to venue, to the east)
- 6515 W Sunset Boulevard (a short walk west, on the north side)
- 1400 Ivar Avenue (Dome Parking Structure) across the street from the Van Gogh portrait mural
Don’t do what we did and park in a random lot that we thought was part of the Van Gogh parking. When we were leaving, the entrance was closed and we saw a security walking through. There was a really cool wall mural though.
Admission
There are several types of tickets that you can purchase on their website.
Flex tickets
VIP – $99
Premium – $64.99
Basic – $54.99
Timed tickets
Basic only
Peak time – $49.99
Off-Peak time – $39.99
Child tickets – $29.99
The difference between a flex ticket vs a timed ticket is that with a flex ticket, you are allowed to come 2 hours pre or post the time you selected while with a timed ticket, you are allowed to come only 20 minutes pre or post the time you selected.
With a VIP-Flex ticket, you get priority access and admission, a Van Gogh cushion that you can keep, a limited edition poster, and a VIP souvenir laminate.
Premium-Flex tickets get you a Van Gogh cushion that you can rent and a limited edition poster.
One good thing was that you can reschedule your ticket fairly easily if you need to change the date (there are no refunds though). We had to change the date that we originally picked and it was simple to do so using this link. You just need to know what email you used and the zip code.
The Van Gogh Exhibit
As you are walking up to the building, you’ll see a nice big mural of Van Gogh on the outside.
The line wasn’t long at all at the time that we went (6PM on a Friday). They do require masks even if you are vaccinated so don’t forget to bring your mask. They didn’t do any temperature checks.
The first thing that we encountered was a lit up hallway and it felt as if we were walking through a tunnel and at the end of it was beautiful imagery. It reminded me of another tunnel art installation also in Los Angeles.
If you got the VIP or Premium tickets, you will be given a token that you can then trade in for a Van Gogh cushion.
There is also a snack bar for you to order food and/or drinks.
You can spend as much time as you want in the first room. There are several art installations here that are interesting.
These are letters that Van Gogh wrote “The beginning is perhaps more difficult than anything else, but keep heart, it will turn out all right.”
Once you are done looking at the artwork then you can head to the gallery. The staff kindly reminded us that once you enter the gallery room, you won’t be able to go back so make sure you get all your photos and videos that you want! Also make sure to use the restroom here as this is the last time you can use it before entering the next room.
The gallery room was not only immersive but also entrancing. The loud music with the visualizations of Van Gogh’s artwork transported you to a different world. You can walk around and look at the many projections or you can sit on the cushions and enjoy the show.
There are chairs too Sitting on our cushions. The floor also had projections.
At the exit of the exhibit, there is a gift shop where you can buy some souvenirs.
This is an event that is good to take your family and friends. Even those who are not that into art or know much about Van Gogh will appreciate everything that went into this enchanting exhibit!
If you are hungry afterwards, we recommend stopping by Stout Burger! It is only a 4 minute walk and they have great burgers, fries, beer and a delicious bread pudding.
